Self-Assessment

Fiction #1

This assignment was decent. I was able to write the story, came up with a fictional piece using my life and background, but exaggerating on it. I did the paper and handed it in on time. We had to make copies for each of our classmates, so they can give us their feed backs on our writing

While writing the story I noticed it was easy for me because it was inspired based on my life. But trying to get the story to cover everything I wanted was difficult. The pages limit was 7-9 pages I went a little over 9 pages; 9 and half of pages. There was so much I wanted to say and I wanted someone to die in the story so badly but it was hard to get to the climax and finish without the story being rushed. After the class reviews I learned more about my writing skills, after reading over my work I see where I can improve on my writing, it is a little difficult to spot my weaknesses so having the paper being work-shopped helped.

Fiction #2

This assignment was due literally right after my work shopped fiction writing. I was overwhelmed with the first story. I lost my creativity and I couldn’t spit out a story. At first, I wanted to do a sequel to my first story so badly to answer questions that weren’t answered but I couldn’t find myself to do it. My brain was blank when it came to the sequel, so I decided to do a new story. Something I have been through but again with exaggerations. I wrote about my 6th grade exams and I spiced it up with drama.

It was very difficult for me to write. I was getting confused. I was not sure where the story was heading. Everything felt hard, it was not as simple as the first story. I got it done but I believe it was not my best work. I learned that if I want to do my best with writing I should probably write about something that has conflicts, motive and a climax to push the story in the right direction. I am working towards being a better writer.

In-Class Essay (Critical Lens Essay)

Initially when the professor introduced the assignment to the class I thought this would be simple and easy. I already had the perfect story to write about which was “Sweetness” by Toni Morrison I really enjoyed this story and I thought of using the Critical Race theory. Perfect combination in my eyes. While doing the assignment I felt stuck, I knew what I wanted to say but couldn’t produce the words. It was obvious race played a role in the story, so I went with that, constantly siting and showing how both the story and the theory made sense.

Though, I finished the essay, I don’t believe I answered what the professor was looking for. But maybe I am wrong. However, I learned a lot about critical lens and how reading through a theory (lens) can help you see the story with a different meaning, or you are able to spot something that you may have missed.
